  • Dr Michael Wong is a urologist practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
  • Dr Wong specialises in minimally invasive surgery in endourology and female urology. He is experienced in performing procedures including percutaneous nephrolithotomy (a minimally invasive procedure to remove stones from the kidney), complex surgical treatment of urinary incontinence that have failed previous surgical treatments, and the repair of bladder-vaginal fistula as a result of complications from previous operations.
  • In 1993, after completing his postgraduate fellowship in general surgery in Edinburgh and Singapore, Dr Wong obtained a fellowship in endourology and urolithiasis at the Institute of Kidney Stone Disease in Indiana, USA. Dr Michael worked with Dr James E. Lingemann, who remains his mentor and friend.
  • Dr Michael Wong was inspired to continue training in America in a completely different subspecialty and obtained a fellowship in female urology and neurourology at the Methodist Hospital in Indiana. He worked with Dr Peter Knapp, who invented the Vaginal Wall Sling to treat urinary incontinence in women with abnormal urethral function.
  • Dr Wong undertook a residency programme in robotic urologic surgery in 2004 at the University of California, Irvine, USA, to perform procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
  • Dr Wong is the founder and chief trainer for the Singapore General Hospital Regional Endourology Fellowship Programme. Since 1998, urologists from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, China and Indonesia have come to Singapore under this programme to learn minimally invasive techniques in endourology and female urology, in particular, percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
  • Dr Wong was elected to the board of directors for the US-based International Society of Endourology in 2006. He is also the only urologist from Asia to be appointed co-chairman of the World Health Organisation 2nd International Consultation in Stone Diseases held in Paris. He was president of the Singapore Urological Association from 2009 to 2012. In 2015, he was appointed deputy director of the Asia School of urology (ASU) to oversee its urological training programme in Southeast Asia, Indochina, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
  • Dr Wong is the Founder President of the Asian Society of Endourology which started in 1998. In 2003, he was made the Life Member of the Japanese Endourology & ESWL Society. In 2006, the Thailand Urological Association conferred him the title of Life Honorary Member.
  • Dr Wong has been part of the International Scientific Committee of the World Congress of Endourology Since 2001. He has published more than 78 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, written 5 chapters in books on urology, is editor of 4 urology books and delivered more than 150 international lectures worldwide. In 2018, he was chosen to deliver the annual Asklepios University Hospital lecture in Hamburg, Germany, in 2018.
  • He was elected in 2009 into the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Urology based in Japan, and was appointed Associate Editor at the British Journal of Urology International (BJUI) in 2013. He also served as an editorial and committee member of the Journal of Endourology, the world’s biggest subscribed academic reference journal for Endourology.
  • Dr Wong has won several Singapore Health Quality Service Awards. He was also awarded the 2018 Secretary Commendation for Global Leadership by the American Urological Association for his leadership and contributions in the field of urology.
  • He maintains his position as visiting consultant and senior lecturer for postgraduate and undergraduate doctors at the Singapore General Hospital and the National University of Singapore.
